OSASUNBERRI is born, a collaborative innovation and investment initiative to strengthen the “km 0” local health sector

In July 2020, and in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, the germ of the collaborative and interregional OSASUNBERRI initiative began, with the aim of joining forces and strengthening the Km 0 health industry and thus achieving effective, comprehensive and sustainable management of the current and future pandemics.

Seeking the integration of all those agents that can contribute knowledge and capabilities in a broad and open value chain, not only to the generally identified health industry, but also to all those actors that contribute to the sector to make it more competitive, the OSASUNBERRI initiative has materialised this November, with a total of 16 entities from the Basque Country collaborating in the project to date.

This group brings together 12 companies, of which 11 are SMEs and 1 is a large pharmaceutical company, 3 are scientific-technological entities, and also includes the participation of the Basque Health Cluster.

The integration of all these participants in OSASUNBERRI allows for an ambitious global approach, as it encompasses the areas of research, technological development, industrial design, manufacturing, certification, intellectual protection and technological surveillance and dissemination.

OSASUNBERRI encompasses three areas of action, to develop comprehensive solutions from pre- and post-infection diagnosis to cellular and pharmacological therapies to reduce or mitigate the effects of infection, all supported by transversal actions in sustainability, digitalisation, knowledge protection, etc. These are the OSASUNTEST, OSASUNTHERAPY and OSASUNCONNECT areas.

The project is aligned with the strategic objectives set out in the Next Generation funds, the recovery plan for Europe. This project focuses on the aspects of reindustrialisation, seeking the reactivation of the productive industry of the environment; sustainability, thanks to its “Km 0” approach, eco-design and orientation towards the circular economy and digitalisation.
